I chose to review Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus because I wanted to read it a second time. The book is a glimpse into a very different world from mine, but it also captures what it feels like to be a young teen. Kambili, the protagonist, is a quiet year-old girl growing up in Enugu, Nigeria.   Purple Hibiscus is a beautifully judged account of the private intimate stirrings of a young girl faced with the familiar public obscenities of tyrannical power, and Adichie is a fresh new voice.

The one we are talking about i.e Purple Hibiscus is surely one of those books. Not only a simple novel book, but there is much more. Purple Hibiscus, Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut, begins like many novels set in regions considered exotic by the western reader: the politics, climate, social customs, and, above all, food of Nigeria (balls of fufu rolled between the fingers, okpa bought from roadside vendors) unfold like the purple hibiscus of the title, rare and fascinating/5().

Praise for: Purple Hibiscus "[A] splendid debut." Vanity Fair "One of the best novels to come out of Africa in years." The Baltimore Sun "The author's straightforward prose captures the tragic riddle of a man who has made an unquestionably positive contribution to the lives of strangers while abandoning the needs of those who are closest to him.".

Kambili Achike, the narrator, is a fifteen-year-old girl living in Enugu, Nigeria with her father, Eugene (Papa), mother, Beatrice (Mama), and older brother, Chukwuku (Jaja). The novel begins on Palm Sunday.

KIRKUS REVIEW. Earnest debut about a year-old girl’s struggle to blossom under the tyranny of her father’s—and country’s—strong arm.

Kambili and her older brother Jaja live a luxurious. Purple Hibiscus is a beautiful book, beautiful and terrible at the same time. The setting is perfectly rendered and I felt like I was really there, seeing, tasting and smelling everything. I love it when a writer takes me out of my world.

The characters are fantastic as well. The backdrop of the novel is one of conflict as a military coup /5(K). Purple Hibiscus is a story of the corruption and religious fundamentalism that grips Adichie’s native country. Told from the point of view of a child, overt political messages are held at an arm’s length, but they inform Kambili’s coming of age.

The wave of bloody coups and corrupt military rule that comprises Nigerian politics are. "Purple Hibiscus" is a much sadder and alarming story, set during one of the many military coups that disrupted Nigeria's 20th century post-Colonial efforts to steer its own course.

LeCat brings a measured, respectful narrative voice to stories that involve and belong to entirely African characters.

The purple hibiscus that blooms in Ifeoma's garden - alive, delicate and precious - becomes the symbol of everything a merciless father and violent regime would trample.

Adichie's superb control of her material seems to falter in the last chapters and the novel sputters. Purple Hibiscus was written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in This post-colonial novel depicts the colonialist regime in Nigeria, a time and place of economic and political instability and the.

The part that I fancy most is the dispute between Eugene and his father (i.e Kambili's grand father) over religion. Well written. I must commend Miss Adiche for a wonderful piece of work.
